Kathleen Shannon, a high school teacher in Connecticut,
writes:
“We love using the WSJ classroom
edition in the classroom. I look forward to it coming every month, and find that
it always brings new discussions to the classroom. The kids look forward to it
as much as I do now. “When I get the newspaper, I save it
for the Friday of the week that it comes. On that Friday, I turn the classroom
into a special place when we read it. I let the students bring coffee or a favorite
drink to class. (Usually they are not allowed to have any beverages in class,
so this becomes a real treat.) I provide doughnuts, and we spend the time "relaxing
& reading." “The students become completely engaged
in the newspaper, and the room is calm & quiet. It is such a good feeling
to see them enjoying this experience. Often they comment on how they never get
a chance to sit and just read. They say there is always an "agenda attached"
when they are asked to read for their other classes, so this becomes an exercise
of reading for pleasure & increasing their knowledge. They know we will discuss
the topics and that I will be expecting their participation. But at first we read
for the sake of simply reading! “It has truly become
my favorite day of the month, and the engaging discussions and lessons that develop
from using the WSJ as a tool in the classroom has made my job as an educator very
fulfilling. I use it for several lessons.” |
