'It's nice to live with someone who isn't like you'
By Frederick Scarf, University of California-Berkeley
We've all heard the horror stories about roommates. You know, the roommate who comes back from the frats and is puking in the trashcan, or the roommate who steals your stuff when you aren't looking. After a year of hearing about the worst living situations, I realize more and more that I've lucked out: Henry is a great roommate!
We are pretty different. I'm from LA, and Henry is from San Jose. I go to bed around midnight, Henry goes to bed…uhh a lot later than that. I don't have a major, Henry is pre-med. And the list goes on.
Despite these differences, we both have a pretty good dynamic and have learned to laugh at ourselves and the world around us. We are always playing jokes on each other, but while we do that, we also have tried to learn more about each other.
He speaks more than one language and came from Canada. He loves playing video games (especially StarCraft—and yes, he does a wonderful job at killing the Zergs). Did I forget the mention that he can solve a rubic cube in 30 seconds?
It's nice to live with someone who isn't like you; it spices things up and adds meaning to my life. I have a few friends who chose their high school friends to room with them in college, which is OK, but that's playing it safe. Isn't college all about exploring?
So my advice is to take a chance. Yes, there is a chance you might end up with a crazy roommate, but there is also a chance you might end up with a person who is unique and interesting. You might end up with a Henry. And if it doe;’t work out, you'll make friends along the way who you want to room with next year.
